Blogging as a Hobby

busy empty nesters blog

Starting and building a blog too might also be considered another kind of hobby.

You get your experiences out there and perhaps help out others in the process gives one a great sense of purpose and meaning.

You can also be a part of a creative community of like minded people and be heard and appreciated.

Possibly even later on as your hobby blog grows and you gain more knowledge and exposure, you might find that it also can be a profitable passive income source too!

There are lots of ways to monetize a blog for example:

affiliate marketing, display ads, sponsored posts, coaching, selling courses just to name a few.

Passive income is income earned that requires little to no daily effort to maintain.

An example of this is renting out living accommodations, income from investments or income from a profitable online blog or website.

It takes work to get up and running, but then it could eventually earn you money while you sleep.

There are tons of people out there just like us who are full-time bloggers and some are earning a substantial income.

You just have to take action now and set it up properly.

If this is something that you would also like to do even spare-time you can search plenty of great free info and introductory courses online to get you started.

Of course you need a customizable platform and a place for your blog to live (hosting) to create your website/blog.

We use “Bluehost” as the hosting company where our site lives and built the website on the WordPress.org platform.

The WordPress CMS (content management system) is used by 75 million sites worldwide and most of the big companies today use it.

We built this site with the free WordPress Astra theme and are customizing it as we go!

Bluehost is based in the U.S. and to date hosts over two million domains on their servers and is one of the largest.

The Basic website/Blog Building Steps Are:

  1. Choose your own custom domain name
  2. Choose a hosting provider & package such as Bluehost
  3. Install WordPress CMS & choose your content theme
  4. Get familiar with the WordPress dashboard
  5. Customize your website/blog to suit your business type or niche
  6. Research related topics for blog posts
  7. Promote your blog – use social sites and learn how to do search engine optimization (SEO)
  8. Find and apply different ways to create passive income from your blog

The amazing thing is that most people today can get online from start to finish with a functioning website without any technical skills or special training in about an hour or so.

* Please note that we can’t make any income claims here but for those who are willing to put in the effort and time to learn at their own pace, blogging could open up possibilities to earn a good living with a niche subject in the online space.

It also doesn’t have to be fancy, just stick to a basic free WordPress theme when starting out.

Your theme is the overall look and style of your site. This includes things like the color scheme, the overall layout and font style etc.

Keep it simple. It’s the great content and value that you want to offer to your audience.

When we did online research for blogging we found a couple of awesome bloggers Alex and Lauren from Create and Go.

They have a bunch of free videos and tips with advice on setting up your website/blog that are step by step and have a casual style.

Also for members only there is a private Facebook group and Podcasts.

They lay it on the line and bare their heart and soul in the training and videos.

Like everything in life, free will only get you so far.

Usually if it is something that you are serious about you will want to further your knowledge anyway and if you really like the instructor’s style, you will support him or her.

This will help in producing further great content.

After all they are giving up their time, knowledge and energy too and deserve to be compensated.

Moving Forward

So starting with the online free info we decided we wanted to go further so we purchased the paid starter course which was reasonably priced and goes into detail on what is required today to become noticed and profitable.

Most important of all, always give value to your audience and learn to provide solutions to issues that people are having.

You can check out the Create and Go course info and materials here.
